City Highlight – Safety Harbor

DiGiovanni Homes builds new homes with spacious, open floor plans in the form of condos, townhomes, and single-family homes, in Tampa Bay’s best communities. In this blog, we are highlighting one of our favorites cities — Safety Harbor.

Safety Harbor

Formerly known as Worth’s Harbor, Safety Harbor was first homesteaded by Count Odet Philippe. Count Philippe was a French nobleman who is credited with introducing the grapefruit in 1823 to Florida. From the early 18th century, the name Safety Harbor originated when pirates were a substantial influence in the area.

History

Safety Harbor has a book entitled “A Brief History of Safety Harbor Florida” by authors Warren Firschein and Laura Kepner as they detail the vibrant history of scenic Safety Harbor.

In 1539, the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto, took up residence in Safety Harbor, thinking that he had discovered the fabled Fountain of Youth. The area’s natural mineral springs attracted the Tocobaga people and would later attract early pioneers to west-central Florida for centuries.

Visitors bathed in the natural mineral in their therapeutic waters. In the twentieth century, the springs were transformed into the world-famous Safety Harbor Resort and Spa. Safety Harbor today is best known for the festivals and artists, poets, writers, and musicians who live here.
