If you live in Clearwater Florida or have visited this beautiful area, you know about our infamous thunder and lightning storms that pop up during our summers? Most people immediately think that the Tampa area is the “Lightning Capital of the World”. Other refer to this area as the “Lightning Capital of North America”. It is even referred to as “Lightning alley” the drive been the Gulf and Titusville.

Nine Tips to Stay Safe

To help you stay safe if a storm should arrive and lightning strikes, here are eleven tips to know about lightning in Clearwater.

  1. The safest place you can be during a storm is indoors, but there are still some risks. Do not touch any plumbing fixtures or metal appliances with wiring or pipes connected outside. It is very risky because lightning can travel through them.
  2. Staying inside a car during a lightning storm can be safer than standing outside. The misconception is that the rubber tires of a car protect you. This is not true. It’s the metal body of the car that protects by conducting an electrical charge into the ground.
  3. No place outside is safe when there is a thunderstorm, not even under a tree.
  4. If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you?
  5. If you hear thunder, move to a safe shelter quickly. A building with electricity or plumbing or a metal-topped enclosed vehicle with the windows up.
  6. After you hear the last sound of thunder, you should stay in a safe shelter for at least 30 minutes.
  7. Remain off of or away from TVs, radio, computers, corded phones or electrical equipment. That puts you in direct contact with electricity.
  8. Avoid water and plumbing, which includes pools, baths, showers, sinks, and faucets.
  9. Stay away from concrete floors or walls.
  10. Remain away from doors, windows, or porches.
  11. Keep away from objects that conduct electricity such as power lines, barbed wire fences, windmills, etc.
